Student Loan Forgiveness

The U.S. Department of Education has created a new call center for borrowers to obtain information about the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 (H.R. 2669). The number for the Federal Student Aid Information Center is (800) 433-3243. The law forgives outstanding education debt for those persons that meet the eligibility requirements. Those that would benefit are employees that have made 120 monthly payments on their loans while serving full-time in social work in public child or family service agencies, government, nonprofit, military, education, and others areas. The loan forgiveness provisions became effective on October 1, 2007. It is important to note that payments made after October 1, 2007 on an existing loan can count towards the 120 payments if the loan meets certain criteria.

Emergency Preparedness Training

Disaster response is an important way in which social workers can serve their communities. In order to make your response as useful as possible, NASW/Texas has approved the “700 NIMS” and "ICS 100" National Incident Management System training for social work continuing education credits. Disaster response has its own language and structure and it is important for social workers to have this basic information prior to volunteering for disaster relief. Upon completion of the course, please fax or email a copy of the certificate of completion to the chapter office and we will mail you your CE certificate at no charge to NASW members. Others may include a check for $15.00 payable to NASW/Texas for a certificate. http://training.fema.gov/emiweb/is/is700a.asp. Completion of this course should be added to your professional resume.
